Papa ʻElima

[Cover Photo] Earth and Space Sciences - At the beginning of each new science unit, we begin with a moʻolelo or ʻike kupuna to connect our cultural knowledge with western scientific findings. We are learning how the earth rotates and orbits around the sun. We created sun dials, became planets orbiting in our solar system, and connected height of sun paths across the skies to various seasons...can you think of a moʻolelo that can connect to these themes? Ask your keiki for the answer. There are at least two!

Drama - This week in Papa 'Elima, we started drama with kumu Jill from Hawaii Theater for Youth. Kumu Jill will be working with us throughout the year to help engage our creative and expressive selves. This week, haumāna created their community ball and explored the theme of ensemble and how we work together as a group towards a common goal.

Papa ʻEono

Papa ‘Eono students have been laying the kāhua, foundation, for their end of year sail with Kānehūnāmoku by exploring its moʻokūʻauhau and notable people who brought her to life.

Also, each week our Papa Waʻa tracks Hōkūleʻa and where she is sailing. We then dive into the history, demographics and culture of the country she is visiting. Last week, our class learned about the Cook Islands while Hōkūleʻa is docked at Avana Harbour, Rarotonga.

Aside from face-to-face learning with our community partners, our students are also beginning their first Informative Writing project on that moʻokūʻauhau. This is the first multi-paragraph research assignment of the year, and we are employing new writing strategies to expand their writing skills.
