This week, Papa Mahina will be presenting their tri. 3 projects to a community member, kumu, or staff. Students spent the past month working on student-driven projects examining the Essential Question: What is my kuleana to protect ʻāina? ʻOhana supported students in passion projects from building food gardens, tea gardens, creating recipes using local ingredients (with samples!), creating cookbooks, experiements around local vs. nonlocal fruits and the impacts of pesticides on our plants, to making organizing a canned food drive, and making laʻau lapaʻau products to share. Students will share about the depth of understanding of a kuleana to ʻāina and reflect on one of our Na Lawena Hoʻokele. Great work to our future kiaʻi and aloha ʻāina warriors!
Papa Makani - Mahalo nui Puha
Mahalo to Anake Emma and Anake Julie from Bellows Air Force Base. We’ve learned a lot of how important our dunes and wetlands are to our wai and kai. We enjoyed learning about different native plants to strengthen our mana’o of being mahi’ai. We learned how to help eradicate Coconut Rhinoceros Beetles. Although it was fun to hold these creatures we know how invasive they are to our ‘aina. From our learning we know that we’ll always check our mulch to see if the larvae are growing. We’ll also make sure to use our own mulch and lepo as much as we can but if we do need to bring in mulch and lepo from somewhere else we’ll be sure to sift through the mulch and lepo to make sure it is clear of CRB larvae. A hui hou or until the next time.
