Updates from Papa ʻEhiku, reflecting on Papa Kālai
Part of the process of Papa Kālai (carving class) was thinking about how haumāna will carry their knowledge of making a papa and pōhaku into the future and how it may guide their kuleana. Haumāna recently received an opportunity to share some of their learning with the Pacific Exchange Network (PEN). In small groups, they create 1-3 minute videos for the PEN Student Film Festival, with a focus on sharing their experience of Papa Kālai and communicating the importance of cultural practices and sustainability in the health of our land and water. Select video entries will be screened in Alaska, American Samoa, Hawaiʻi, and Guam/CNMI in celebration of Earth Day.
This week Papa ʻElima visited with our Kānehūnāmoku ʻohana at Kaʻalaea. Although the wind kept us from sailing, we got the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to sail! Haumāna worked on their knot tying, kilo skills, and practiced putting up the sail!
On Friday we also took our second huakaʻi to the gym! We appreciate having more field space and courts to participate in P.E. We have been playing kickball and basketball focusing on our skills and working together!
