Our kupuna only entered the forest when they had kuleana or reason to. This area, the Wao Akua was a sacred place that was protected. Cultural practioners carry this kuleana and legacy to mālama our forests and protect it for generations. Kumu Charlani carries this kuleana as a hula practitioner and kumu. We mahalo Kumu Charlani for bringing us to this special wahi of Puʻu Aniʻaniʻa to share moʻolelo and lessons on how to gather strawberry guava to make our kalaʻau. Kumu shares that while this guava is introduced we learn how to adapt and use its wood for houses to instruments today.
